The Landesmuseum Mainz also offers visitors the chance to touch, listen, smell and try things out. The exploration and testing e.g. of the so-called hands on exhibits, also part of the exhibition concept, is expressly requested! How, for example, were the elaborate building facades of the Middle Ages created? In six work stages, visitors can see the process of creating these facades – from the smooth stone to the coloured painting of the reliefs, and learn about the techniques the craftsmen used at the time and what simple tools they had to carve the stone. In another section which explains the story of the Three Wise Men, there are also barrels with gold, incense and myrrh. Who knows what myrrh smells like and what it is used for?
There is also plenty more to discover and experience in the museum’s new departments – something for all the senses!
The museum’s events also follow this principle and are aimed at everyone – from kindergarten and nursery age, to school children, to pensioners interested in art and culture as well as parents who want to offer their children a different type of activity for their free time. There are weekly courses on offer for children aged 3 years onwards, for young persons and adults.
We also strive to continually expand our services and appeal to new visitor groups We even have an internet site for kids – have a look for yourself!
